I want to post a classified ad to find employees. Why is it so expensive?

I have posted my ad on MySpace Classified and Craigslist because its free. I wanted to utilize a few other free sites but I am unsure where they are. These sites Yahoo Classifieds ($342) and Careerbuilder($476) I honestly feel are too damn expensive for a business like mine. I run a small business with fewer than 10 employees. I know I can write this off as a business expense but how will I make money if I have to pay this much everytime I need an employee?

To be honest, Craigslist and MySpace have gotten me great responses. But i would like more exposure. I woudn’t mind paying up to $50 for a 4 day ad in the paper but they want more than that. Any suggestions?


Yeah, my suggestion is to pony up and pay the people. You get what you pay for.

If your free ads were working well for you, you wouldn’t be asking this question, so they apparently aren’t, and you got what you payed for.

You should also ask your present employees if they have any friends that would like to work for you too. If you are a good employer, they most likely may.

    If your free ads were working well for you, you wouldn’t be asking this question, so they apparently aren’t, and you got what you payed for.

    You should also ask your present employees if they have any friends that would like to work for you too. If you are a good employer, they most likely may.

    If your a legit business, use your State’s Department of Employment, they should list it for free.

    I would also try maybe a 1-2 week run in the Sunday Employment section. This should be cost effective without getting an overwhelming response.

    classified rates are based on circulation or viewers/page hits, etc – online, the exposure is a lot more, so you’re going to pay more – is there a weekly local newspaper where you live? try that – the ad will be there for a week instead of a day and will just go to local people from your area is is who I assume you are looking for. If the two free spots are working for you – just keep using them
